Some individuals have an immense love for animals, compelling them to go to great lengths to be near them. Dolph C. Volker is one such person.
An ardent animal lover with a degree in zoology, Volker’s life profoundly changed when he experienced the loss of his first dog, who died in his arms.
This moment intensified his compassion and respect for all living creatures.
Driven by his passion for animals, Volker became an advocate for their welfare. He began volunteering at the Cheetah Experience in South Africa, a sanctuary focused on raising awareness about endangered species and responsibly breeding cheetahs in captivity.
This volunteer work ignited Volker’s particular fascination with cheetahs. Despite having a full-time job in the U.S., he dedicates all his savings and vacation time to volunteer at the Cheetah Experience.
During one of these visits, he developed a unique bond with a cheetah named Eden. Initially cautious about getting too close to the cheetahs, Volker’s apprehension melted away when Eden approached him as he napped under a tree and decided she liked him.
Eden’s friendly approach marked the beginning of an extraordinary friendship. She started to snuggle with Volker, and they often cuddled together.
Volker even allowed Eden to groom him, which occasionally involved some nibbling. Despite these little nips, Volker grew accustomed to Eden’s behavior, and they became inseparable friends.
Volker was astonished by Eden’s affectionate nature. He found her more interactive and loving than most domesticated cats.
Eden frequently lay on him, purred, and slept cuddled up close to him. Volker cherished these moments, even when Eden playfully bit his ear, which he admits could be painful.
Volker’s time with Eden deepened his affection for cheetahs. Recognizing how special these animals are, he felt a compelling urge to support and protect them. This dedication earned him the nickname “The Cheetah Whisperer.” Volker’s commitment to cheetahs goes beyond volunteering.
He plans to establish a non-profit cheetah breeding center in South Africa. He is also the legal owner and guardian of Gabriel The Cheetah, the first member of his cheetah family and part of his breeding project. Volker has known Gabriel since he was eight months old, and they have shared a strong bond from the start.
Volker has specific plans for Gabriel and the future cheetahs, aiming to give them a life as close to freedom as possible and to show them what it means to be a cheetah.
Volker’s story highlights the incredible bonds that can form between humans and animals, reminding us of the importance of respecting and protecting all life.
