As we were driving down the road, we caught sight of a thin, emaciated dog with a chain still on her neck. Despite her caution, we managed to approach her and noticed that her teats were swollen, clearly indicating that she was nursing her puppies.
We followed her and witnessed something we never expected to see – she regurgitated the food we gave her so that her puppies could eat. It was both sad and touching at the same time.
Not only did we discover her puppies, but we also found five others who belonged to a different mother. All of them were weak and malnourished, but this mama dog was willing to sacrifice herself so that her babies could have enough to eat.
Our hearts ached at the thought of these innocent creatures struggling to survive. We knew we had to do something to help them. So, the next day, we went back and rescued the mama dog and her nine puppies – four from the emaciated mother and five from a different mother. All of them needed immediate care, deworming, vaccinations, and plenty of milk and food.
Sadly, the smallest and weakest puppy started having seizures upon arrival at the shelter. We suspected that it was due to an electrolytic imbalance, so we gave him dextrose orally. Although he could stand and walk, he was not eating. So, we decided to feed him slurry to ensure he received the nutrients he needed to thrive.
It’s difficult to fathom the selflessness and sacrifice of this mama dog, who was willing to give up her own nourishment to ensure her babies had enough to eat. Her actions remind us of the innate goodness and kindness that animals possess, even in the most difficult of circumstances.
We are dedicated to ensuring that these dogs receive the care and support they need to recover and live full, healthy lives. This story of selflessness and resilience is a powerful reminder of the strength of the animal-human bond and the importance of compassion in our world.
