The rescue team was horrified when they looked into the back of the trucks, and saw 36 dogs crammed in gunny bags. The dogs were completely stuffed in bags except for their heads. It broke the rescuers hearts. Their sad eyes begged the rescuers to save them from certain death.
The rescue team removed all the dogs from the bags and brought them to safety. Each dog was held and loved on to let them know they were safe.
โDog meat consumption in India is illegal, and the way the trade is carried out is cruel. We are fortunate to have saved the lives of these dogs and hope that they will only get better from now on,โ states N. G Jayasimha, Managing Director HSI/India.
The police were notified about the illegal act and drivers reported. The drivers worked for Aizawl Dog Meat Seller Association in Mizoram. They petitioned the court to get the dogs back. Thankfully, the court awarded temporary custody of the dogs to HSI.
โWe are delighted that the court has rejected the dog meat sellersโ application for custody,โ said Jayasimha. The case is still ongoing, but HSI will fight for each dog. Then they will work to find loving and forever homes for each.
