Their curly fur makes them totally distinguishable from other breeds. Selkirk Rex cats are also called sheep cats, which are inspired by their unusual fur. They first appeared in 1987 in the Selkirk Mountains in Montana, and people named this new breed after the mountains. Their curly hair is the result of a natural mutation from a blue tortoiseshell cat and a white cat.

The first Selkirk Rex kitten is Miss DePesto, who was named after her breeder- Jeri Newman’s stepfather. Newman then realized that Depesto carried “the dominant curly-coat gene, but also the recessive gene for long hair.” Both feline parents must have at least one copy of the long-hair gene to produce a long-haired offspring.

This new breed was introduced to TICA’s board of directors back in 1990 and quickly gained its reputation. It was classified into the miscellaneous class by the CFA two years later and won the CFA championship status in 2000.

Though Selkirk Rexes are renowned for their curls, some of them have straight fur. Their hair becomes more fixed when they grow up, but it is still so soft that some give the cats the title “teddy bears”.
